Human Harmonized Touchscreen Tasks
Human Harmonized Touchscreen Tasks
Western Interdisciplinary Research Building (WIRB)/Social Science Centre (SSC)
Many disorders - like Alzheimer's disease or ADHD - can affect mental abilities like memory and attention. To explore how these effects could be related to changes in the brain, or to test new drug treatments, scientists often use mice or rats to model these disorders. However, tests of mental abilities can look very different for mice compared to people, and sometimes the results of these tests do not match. To address this issue, we have adapted several mouse touchscreen tests for use with people and are looking for a group of healthy volunteers to try them out. Our goal is to confirm that the tests are working as expected, to compare results to our existing mouse tests, and to collect data for developing future studies.
Adults 18+ years old
Healthy Volunteers
Able to use a touchscreen device
Who can participate in this study?
Adults (18 years or older) with normal or corrected-to-normal vision and no known neurological conditions (such as Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD, or autism spectrum disorder). Participants should also have the ability to understand basic English instructions and use a touchscreen device with their hands to complete the tasks.
What is involved?
Our study involves doing a few tests on a touchscreen device (like a computer tablet). For all of these tests, you will be shown one or more pictures or shapes, and you will have to choose a response depending on the test. For example, you might have to tap on the screen as quickly as possible if you see a specific shape, or you might have to press on a specific location on the screen, or you might have to choose between different pictures. You will also be asked to complete a series of “brain games” from a company called Creyos that measure similar mental abilities. This may be completed in one visit, or you may be asked to come back for multiple visits. Each visit will take approximately one to one-and-a-half hours to complete. You will be compensated $15 for completing all of our tests (about 1 hour total), and an additional $5 for completing all of the Creyos brain games (about 20 minutes total).
