Autobiographical Recall and Altered Audio

In this study, the researchers are collecting data about the ways in which popular music can evoke memories from the past. If you participate, you will listen to U.S. Billboard popular songs from your youth (7-19 years of age) and answer questions about what if any memories they evoke (autobiographical memories). The study will take place in person at a time of your convenience in one 90-120-minute session.

Who can participate in this study?

Participants must be 17 years or older, fluent in English and have normal or corrected-to-normal hearing.

 

What is involved?

Participants will come to the Western Interdisciplinary Research Building (WIRB) for their single testing session, lasting between 1 and 2 hours. Participants will first answer some questions about their musical background and emotions. The main task involves listening to short excerpts popular music and responding to questions about their experience of hearing the music and what if any memories it evoked. Participants will conclude the experiment with a brief exit survey about their current emotions.
