Using Eye Tracking to Study Reading Comprehension

Using Eye Tracking to Study Reading Comprehension

map-marker.pngWestern Interdisciplinary Research Building (WIRB)

Reading comprehension is a very important skill as people interact with the world. However, readers differ in their ability to monitor their text understanding and then choose reading behaviours to improve their comprehension. We are interested in how readers with a variety of backgrounds process texts for meaning.

18 to 35 years old

With or without ADHD

Can read in English

Who can participate in this study?

  • We are currently looking for adults between the ages of 18 and 35 with and without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
  • Participants can be English-only speakers or speak English and another language at home.
  • Participants must be able to read in English.

To be included in the adult group, the individual must be within the age range of 17 to 35 years old. The 17-year-olds will all be university students. The same criteria for children applies to the adults with respect to bilingual status and ADHD status. We will stop recruiting for each group when we have reached our target for that subgroup. All participants must be able to speak English fluently and read English texts. All participants must agree to have their responses audio-recorded for specific tasks outlined in the letter of information.-->

What is involved?

Our study involves reading a series of paragraphs while particpants' eye movements are tracked with an eye-tracker. Participants will also complete a series of other language and cogntive tasks (vocabulary, word reading, working memory). The single session will take approximately 1.5 hours.
