Reliability and Validity testing of the Western Breast Interference Scale

map-marker.pngOnline & Elborn College (EC)

Women are disproportionately affected by chronic spinal pain (e.g. neck and back pain) compared to men. While many theories attempt to explain the difference, a common one in both the medical and lay fields is that larger breasts cause spinal pain, leading many women to undergo invasive surgeries to relieve their pain. The research to support this practice is not strong, so we are undertaking a new program of research to rigorously explore this phenomenon. The first step is to have a strong measurement tool that can be used for research in this area. We have created such a tool (a patient survey) and this first study is intended to help us ensure that this new tool is good enough to be used in ongoing research into this important area for women's health.

Healthy Volunteers

Who can participate in this study?

1. Females aged 18 to 55 years
2. No prior history of breast or spinal surgeries
3. Body Mass Index (BMI) <30.0 kg/m2 (equating to non-obese)
4. No history of cancer, or receiving treatment for cancer, in the past 5 years
5. Able to read and understand conversational English (Grade 6)
6. Ambulates bipedally (walks to get around) without mobility aids or assistants, as the hypotheses are related to key postural lever arms that are somewhat different in those who use wheeled or other modes of ambulation
7. Not currently pregnant or lactating

What is involved?

There are 3 parts to this study and participants can choose to participate in just 1, 2, or all 3.

Part 1: Complete an online survey that includes the new measurement tool in addition to other established tools and information about you (age, height, weight, etc...). This will take about 20 minutes and is only done once.

Part 2: We need 40 people to complete the new survey tool again one week after the first time to help us understand how much responses may fluctuate over this time in otherwise stable people. This repeat administration will take about 15 more minutes.

Part 3: We need 50 people to physically come to Western's campus to undergo some physical evaluation that includes height, weight, pain sensitivity, breast weight and size. Compensation for time is offered based on the number of different parts of the study you participate in.
