map-marker.pngWestern Interdisciplinary Research Building (WIRB)

Do you like to listen to other people talking while you are doing something else? How does your brain process speech when you are paying attention to something else? Does speech really go “in one ear and out the other” when you are not paying attention? We are looking for your help to answer this question!

Adults 18 to 40 years old

Native North American English speaker

Right-Handed

Who can participate in this study?

  • Age: 18-40 years
  • No history of hearing or neurological issues
  • Native North American English speaker
  • Right-Handed

What is involved?

This study takes place over one 2-hour visit, when you will sit in a quiet room listening to speech presented over a loudspeaker and watching shapes on a computer screen in front of you. Sometimes you will be asked questions about the speech you heard, and sometimes you will be asked to count how many times you see a specific symbol. While you are doing these tasks, we will be collecting EEG data from you. This is a completely painless and harmless, non-invasive imaging method that involves having you wear a special cap with electrodes and gel in your hair. You will be compensated $30 for your time.
