Exercise and hearing in adults with hearing loss
Understanding Fitness and Hearing Relationship in Adults with Hearing Loss
National Centre for Audiology (Elborn College)
We want to understand the relationship betweem hearing, cognition and fitness in older adults with hearing loss. Previous studies have looked at how much a clinical hearing test, called an audiogram, improves following completion of a fitness program. However, nobody has measured if this improvement translates into real-world hearing tasks like hearing in noise.
Adults with hearing loss
55 years or older
Proficient in English
Who can participate in this study?
To be eligible, you must be an adult with hearing loss who proficient in English
- You must also not be currently participating nor plan to participate in group exercise program during the study period (8-12 weeks)
What is involved?
Our study involves up to six visits for each participant: three at baseline and three at follow-up. Each visit is up to 2 hours. Our study has 2 groups: exercise vs. non-exercise (control), and participants can self-select whether they want to join either group. Participants who do not have a preference will be randomized conventionally.
All participants are fitted with premium hearing aids and undergo the same study procedures which includes hearing, cognitive and fitness assessments. Participants in the intervention group will attend exercise classes at the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging at no cost for 12 weeks. Baseline Assessments:
- Visit 1: Hearing Test, Hearing aid fittings and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)
- Visit 2: Advanced Speech Tests (e.g. Repeating speech back in noise), Fitness Assessment (e.g. Mobility, muscle strength, cardiorespiratory endurance flexibility, balance and agility)
- Visit 3: Cognitive assessments including memory, executive function, language and processing speed, repeat tests at follow-up
- Visit 4: Hearing Test,Cognitive assessment including memory, executive function, language and processing speed
- Visit 5: Advanced Speech Tests (e.g. Repeating speech back in noise, Fitness Assessment (e.g. Mobility, muscle strength, cardiorespiratory endurance flexibility, balance and agility)
- Visit 6 (if needed): Tests may continue until completed
