The Voice You Know: Advantages of Familiarity

It is a known phenomenon that familiar voices are able to be more easily understood under challenging listening conditions. The goal of the present project is to investigate if familiar voices are easier to process than unfamiliar ones.

18 - 40 years old

Who can participate in this study?

To be eligible, both partners must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: 18-40 years
  • The pair must know each other and speak frequently for at least 1 year
  • Native North American English speakers
  • No hearing impairments
  • Normal or corrected-to-normal (contacts or glasses) vision

What is involved?

We are recruiting people in pairs. You and your partner wil be invited to visit the laboratory independently for recording and experimental sessions.

  1. The recording session will last 1 hour. After both you and your partner have finished all of your recordings, we will schedule the experimental session.
  2. The experimental session will last 2 hours. You will listen to recordings made by other participants, including your partner, and be asked to report the words you heard.

In total, participation across the two sessions will last about 3 hours for each of you. You and your partner will be compensated $15 / hour CAD each for your participation in all sessions of this study.
