Acquired Brain Injury Study in Children
PREDICT-ABI Study
Children's Hospital (London Health Sciences Centre)
Children's Hospital (London Health Sciences Centre)
Our team is studying ways to improve care for children who slip into coma after brain injury. This work involves comparing brain's response to sounds of such unresponsive brain-injured children with that of age-matched healthy children. As a healthy child volunteer in this study, you’ll be helping researchers understand how the brain responds to sounds, stories, and instructions, things we all experience every day. Your participation will help us compare typical brain responses to those of children with brain injuries, so we can learn more about hidden awareness and improve care for kids who are seriously ill.

Who can participate in this study?
Healthy children, 18 years old or less. They should have no prior history of neurological disease or cognitive impairment and no MRI contraindications (metal in body, pacemakers, etc.).
What is involved?
During your visit, you’ll listen to recordings and follow simple tasks while we safely measure your brain activity using one or more tools: EEG (which uses a stretchy cap with sensors to track brain waves), fNIRS (which uses a cap fitted with light sources and detectors to measure blood flow and oxygen levels in the brain), and fMRI (which takes pictures of your brain while you lie still in a scanner). These activities are designed to be engaging and comfortable. Participants can choose to participate in one or more brain scan (neuroimaging) modalities: EEG, fNIRS or fMRI. Each recording takes about 1 hour to complete. Participants will receive a gift card as a token of appreciation.
